Work for the month |
AugustThe honey flow will have stopped in most areas and lets hope the crop is a good one. Common wisdom is that you should leave the honey with the bees for a fortnight. Bees can become irritable at the end of a honey flow and this period will allow them to calm down a little. Winter bees will be produced over the next few months and it is essential that you have the healthiest bees possible for overwintering. This means treating for varroa and feeding, starting as soon as possible. The association will meet at the apiary for a demonstration on removal of the crop on Saturday 21st of August at 3p.m. hosted by Noel Power. Directions to the apiary can be found on the "Find Us" page. |

Queen rearing at Co. Cork association '09A very successful queen rearing demonstration was organised and run by Noel Power at Co. Cork BKA during May '09. This resulted in the production of a large number of queen cells which were used to make up nucs for sale to beginners and some of which were distributed to members who had prepared colonies to mate them from. More about the queen rearing programme can be found here: Queen Rearing '09 |
Registration with the DepartmentMembers are reminded that they should register with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food as primary food producers. The necessary form can be downloaded from here and should be returned to the Department. |
